Antique Amish Puzzle Ball Pin Cushion, Polished Blue Cotton Fabric, Large Size
This is an Amish puzzle ball pin cushion that measures about 4″ diameter. It is hard-stuffed and covered with a blue polished cotton fabric. The blue has faded to a dark blue-gray but the original bright blue can be seen where the seams expose the fabric hem. It is all sewn by hand. There are some holes but no leakage and no odor.
Although called pin cushions, these were actually for ornamental rather than actual use, something the Amish would refer to as being “plain and fancy”. Most would be hung in a cupboard or from a mantel shelf. For reference, refer to “Bits and Pieces, Textile Traditions”, page 34, or Patricia Herr’s “Amish Arts of Lancaster County”, page 56.
